Lossless extraction vs. converting

A video file is a container: the picture and the sound sit inside it as separate streams. "Extracting audio" should therefore mean copying one stream out — not decoding it and squeezing it through a second encoder, which is what most online converters do and why their output sounds slightly worse than the original. This tool copies the AAC stream as-is into an M4A container, so the only thing that changes is the wrapper. MP3 and WAV cannot hold AAC frames, so those two genuinely re-encode: use them when a specific format is required, and use M4A when quality matters.

Supported formats — honestly

Lossless (no re-encoding): MP4, M4V, MOV containing an AAC audio track — by far the most common case for phone recordings, screen captures, editor exports and downloaded video.
Re-encoded (MP3 / WAV): anything your browser can decode, limited to 30 minutes because decoding audio is memory hungry.
WebM and MKV: no lossless path on the fast route. You can convert them to MP3 or WAV, or load an optional ~31 MB engine that copies Opus, Vorbis or FLAC tracks out untouched. That engine is lazy-loaded only when you ask for it, so it never slows the page down.

FAQ

Is extracting audio from video really free?

Yes — completely free, with no watermark, no sign-up and no daily limit. Competing sites cap free exports at one minute, stamp a watermark on the result or force you to create an account; this tool does none of that.

Does the extracted audio lose quality?

Not on the M4A path. The AAC audio track is copied out of the MP4 container frame by frame, exactly as the camera or editor encoded it — nothing is decoded and nothing is re-encoded, so the result is bit-for-bit identical audio. Only the MP3 and WAV options re-encode, and the tool says so before you use them. One small caveat: encoder-delay (gapless) metadata is not carried over, so a few milliseconds of silence may appear at the very start in some players.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The container is parsed and repackaged inside your browser tab, so nothing is uploaded. That is also why it is fast: uploading a 500 MB video just to get 5 MB of audio makes no sense, and here you never wait for an upload at all.

Which video formats are supported?

MP4, M4V and MOV files with AAC audio use the lossless path. WebM and MKV have no lossless path here — you can either convert them to MP3 or WAV, or load an optional advanced engine (a one-time ~31 MB download) that copies out Opus, Vorbis, FLAC or other tracks without re-encoding. That engine is never downloaded unless you click the button.

Why is there a duration limit on MP3 and WAV but not on M4A?

MP3 and WAV require decoding the audio into raw samples first, which is memory hungry — an hour of stereo audio is roughly 1.2 GB of RAM, enough to crash a browser tab. So those two are limited to 30 minutes (less on phones). The lossless M4A path never decodes anything, so it has no duration limit at all.
